The core of the historic building with its thick foundation walls and almost square floor plan is probably the oldest building in the Lower Town. The tower served as the home of one of the four night watchmen. In the 15th century, a front tower with gate and so-called Wachtergangerl was added. Until the 19th century, it was used as an entrance to the city from the south-east.
