The ring of walls around the “Upper” and “Lower” town and the former 22 towers with their design elements characterised the outer appearance of the town until the 19th century. The ring wall of the fortification was built of bricks with pebble infill. However, their architectural style differed between the Upper and Lower Towns. A brick arcade was built around the upper town, with a brick walkway running over its arches. The fortification in the Lower Town was less elaborately designed and consisted of a brick wall with an attached wooden walkway. Today’s remains are mainly found on the east and west sides in the Upper Town but there are also isolated remains in the Lower Town.
